Style and substance sent straight to your inbox
I’m an editor and writer and content strategist who consults in the fashion and beauty industries. My experience includes Vogue Australia where I was the Fashion Features and Content Strategy Director, interviewing names such as Dries Van Noten, Haider Ackermann, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Agnes Varda and ideated Vogue Codes. I brought my editorial experience to MECCA, Australia and New Zealand’s pre-eminent beauty retailer where I served as Head of Content and Editorial Strategy, overseeing tone of voice and brand as well as launching its first podcast.
You can follow me on Instagram, and you can read more about me at The Design Files, Bed Threads and Fashion Journal.
For free subscribers, you will receive:
The Edit: lists of recommendations on what to READ/WHAT/EXPLORE/SHOP. I’m that friend who texts you that article that I think you’ll like, takes a photo of my favourite laksa paste, or DMs you when I find that dress you’ve been after on sale.
Screen Tests: interviews with interesting people, from intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs, designers, content creators, editors and more.
If you do value the work — enjoyable work — that I put into this newsletter, do consider becoming a paid subscriber where you will receive the above AND:
Style Strategy: this series covers how to develop and cultivate your personal style — it’s such a part of identity and psychology. While I love to shop, this is not about shopping — it’s about giving you the tools to navigate your existing wardrobe rather than thinking you need to buy something to fix yourself, or your style.
Brand Deep-dives: with my experience in editorial, retail and the business of fashion and beauty, this is my insider’s take which covers mainly marketing and content strategy of some of your favourite brands.
Give-aways and other special offers: I have sent out books to paid subscribers, complimentary subscriptions and more.
What do I get as a founding member?
Not to be all like “in response to all your DMs…” but, also, I get a lot of specific questions about style, shopping, fashion, or more. I’m not able to get to them and to spend the time. As a founding member, I’ll do one thoughtful curation of your choice — a reading list, some wardrobe suggestions — or answer some specific style advice. The choice is yours.
How can I see past newsletters?
Only paid subscribers will have access to the full archive.
What they say
“Former fashion journo and ultimate industry cool girl Zara Wong's newsletter, born from the Melbourne lockdowns of 2021, has been a long-time favourite on the platform for us, Wong being described by Substack as the "clever, stylish friend you always needed" (we'd agree). Her impeccably curated newsletters feature personal recommendations of things to read, watch, listen, shop and just generally pay attention to in the fashion industry.” — Russh magazine
“Australia's Zara Wong is the best kind of ‘influencer’, sharing lists of curated shopping suggestions and her weekly must-reads.” — InStyle magazine
“A mainstay in the Australian fashion, beauty and lifestyle space, Zara Wong’s Screenshot This offers smart analysis of how celebrity, fashion and brand intersect. Read her takes on personal taste, runways, our current style icons and fashion media, and browse curated recommendations, playlists and designer edits. It’s slick, clever and glossy; a magazine in newsletter form.” — Fashion Journal
“Former Vogue writer Zara Wong is the clever, stylish friend you always needed.” — Substack Featured
“Brand consultant, writer, and editor, formerly working with Mecca and Vogue, Zara Wong is a pioneer in the beauty and fashion industry. Her fashion-forward Substack ‘Screenshot This’ is a curated list of things to watch, read, listen to and shop. Like a text message conversation between friends, ‘Screenshot This’ playfully delivers recommendations worth trying no matter how big or small.” — Bed Threads
“My chief pop culture joy of 2022 has been rediscovering email newsletters... My favourites, quite unimaginatively, are fashion-related. In Australia, former Vogue writer Zara Wong’s Screenshot This is an obsessively curated list of reads and shopping suggestions (Street Talk's Sarah Thompson tells me she buys something at least once a week based on Wong's recommendations. It's such a lovely escape into Wong’s very clever and stylish mind.” — Lauren Sams for the Australian Financial Review
“Zara Wong is one of the most accomplished people in Australia’s fashion and beauty media industry.” — Amelia Barnes for The Design Files
“A surefire crowd favourite on social media, Zara also reports on all things worth browsing, reading, cooking and listening to via her new Substack, Screenshot This.” — Jerico Contemporary gallery
“I’d been following Zara Wong on Instagram for a while before she launched her Substack, Screenshot This, about a year ago, which I love… When I decided to do WintourRama Zara was the first person I thought of—high caliber local talent with an international vision.” — Bri Lee for her Substack, News and Reviews
“I follow Zara Wong’s Substack for a mélange of pop culture / fashion” — interview with Monique Foy, founder of Cosmic Dealer
“I’m an avid reader of Zara’s Screenshot This newsletter and love it. It’s her honest and intelligent commentary and her knack for finding the perfect edit of pieces that does it for me. What I didn’t expect was a significant number of new followers and an uplift in sales for my business, RECIETY when she featured it discussing designer vintage in her January newsletter. It shows the trust Zara’s audience has in her and her power of conversion. Can’t wait for more great content from Screenshot This.” — Jessica Steuart-Hoyler from RECIETY
“Love your newsletter, Zara! Just bought the leopard trench (BARGAIN), so props on your excelllllllent influencing.” — a reader
“Zara this is the only newsletter where I click on every link! Love it.” — a reader
“I love love love your screenshot this. It’s always full of really interesting things I would never stumble across so thank you for brightening my week.” — a reader
“Stop making me buy things. This is the second week in a row I’ve shopped from this newsletter.” — a reader
“I almost always put down what I’m doing when I get the email notification and find a corner to read it. It’s seriously good and I read most of the links and appreciate your insights into writing, culture, books reviews and so much more. Plus love that you’re a fashion nerd.” — a reader
