Style Strategy 011: How to wear jewellery with personality
3 ways to wear jewellery with intention and not as an afterthought.

When it comes to jewellery, there are the times where you go bare (or the bare minimum), and other times when it’s all out — huge statement earrings for that party, or a bracelet stack.
But, what do you do the in-between days, which, to be honest, takes up the majority of our lives?
Gold and silver jewellery can have the misconception of something that can be quiet. Subdued, But, if you really think about how you're wearing jewellery and how you're putting it together, you can make it so much more fun, creative, and personal.
As someone who truly believes that what we put on is how we express ourselves — it’s our own visual language that speaks volumes — I also believe that we can communicate the same way with our jewellery. Jewellery shouldn’t be an afterthought.
And as a self-confessed bowerbird, I love experimenting to get the most of what I already have and using jewellery to tell a story.
To demonstrate, I’ve partnered with jewellery brand
to have a play around to show you how to wear some of my favourite pieces with a bit more intention whilst keeping it easy to do, and seemingly effortless. Low effort, high impact.
CONSIDER… MIXED METALS
I know, I know, it’s cliched to claim that there’s that one jewellery rule of only sticking to one metal tone, and saying that that rule’s redundant and needs to be broken. We all know that, but, how? Throwing everything on in one go doesn’t always work out — it can look… not quite right. You know?
Below, I actually want to be making a point of there being different metal tones through conscious repetition.
On my ears, I have the Organic Dôme Pebble Earrings in both silver and gold in each ear. It’s an easy way to make a statement earring shape without relying on a longer earring (which reads as more occasion-dressing). Instead, you’re creating volume up along the ear. The same earrings but in different metals really makes a point of the duo-tone metals.
On my hands below, I’m wearing the Organic Dôme Ripple Chain Bracelet also in silver and gold. See what I’m doing here?! In both these examples, the mix of metals actually visually lightens the look and makes it work day-to-day.
Because I’ve got quite a bit going on, I kept the rings quite simple here. They’re all slightly different shapes so rather than sitting flush against one another, there’s some gaps in between which makes them visually lighter too. Starting at the ring finger closest to the knuckle, I’m wearing the Dôme Figure Ring (gold), the Thin Dôme Ring (gold) and half of the Organic Dôme Crown Nesting Set (silver).
I’m wearing it with a long blazer coat. Being quite sharp, I wanted the jewellery I paired with it to be more organic in shape so that the look wasn’t full of straight lines.
CONSIDER… PROPORTIONS
Many people are wary of wearing both a statement earring and a necklace. I get it — it can make it feel like there’s a lot going on at the neck and face area. But, if you choose two pieces that complement each other without being entirely matchy-matchy, it actually brings the entire look together.
Below, I’m wearing the Mega Dôme Earrings and the Organic Dôme Tidal Chain Necklace. While they are similar in shape, they have different weights; the necklace by very nature of being a chain is a lot lighter with the links, and the earrings are quite voluminous. This is intentional — there’s a bit of almost-matching but not quite, it’s a counterbalance.
When pairing jewellery together, there needs to be a dialogue between the two pieces whereby they make sense together but also apart. This slight off-ness gives the pairing a bit more of a modern edge, while still being very ‘pulled together’ (without being prissy!)
I had so much satisfaction wearing the chain necklace with this top; the softness of the drape is a counterbalance to the tone and weight of the metal. Every single element here is a counterbalance to something else.
For the right image below, I switched out the earrings for the Organic Dôme Mixed Pebble Earrings to show the versatility in mixing and matching statement earrings with a statement necklace. On my finger, I’ve got the Dome Figure Ring. This is a classic rule of three (three gold elements) here which ties the entire look together.
Here’s how Russh described my newsletter: “Former fashion journo and ultimate industry cool girl Zara Wong’s newsletter has been a long-time favourite on the platform for us, Wong being described by Substack as the “clever, stylish friend you always needed” (we'd agree). Her impeccably curated newsletters feature personal recommendations of things to read, watch, listen, shop and just generally pay attention to in the fashion industry.” So, maybe it’s time to subscribe, or upgrade your subscription.
CONSIDER… JEWELLERY AS ADORNMENT
When I saw adornment, I mean for your clothes. I fastened the Organic Dôme Ripple Chain Bracelet onto my suede handbag (old Reformation) onto the straps for a pop of hardware. It adds a bit of texture, especially when I’m wearing it with a darker outfit.
An easy styling hack I use a lot is throwing a knit over my shoulders and knotting them. To dress it up, I fastened the knit together with the Dôme Cuff Bracelet in silver. As I’m wearing a slinky satin shirt and draped jeans and a knit, this outfit can read as very casual and relaxed — the silver accent on the knitwear just helps elevates it.
To pick up on the silver, I added the Dôme Figure Hoops and the Jojo Double Hoops on my ears, the Organic Dôme Ripple Chain Bracelet in silver and the Organic Dôme Crown Nesting ring set on my pinkie.
